When have you set yourself a target and then really gone after it?
As it is now February have you let your New Year’s resolutions fall by the wayside? Don’t worry too much, 70% of people don’t get this far either and 23% don’t get beyond the first week.
The problem with many New Year’s resolutions is that they are not sustainable because they are not easily repeatable or instantly rewarding.
And far too few can be measured. When this is the case how will you know when you are done?
This is a problem I have noticed with clients too. How do you measure better communication?
Unless you are preparing for that big moment or have someone like me coaching and filming you then giving feedback, I admit it is hard to quantify.
So instead do this.
What will being a better communicator mean to you in terms of your career, life and other goals?
What do you need to do to communicate better today to get you nearer to this goal?
Visualise what success looks like. Screw up your eyes in concentration if you must (although I think a walk with the dog amongst trees normally relaxes my brain enough to daydream effectively).
Don’t be vague. Build a compelling 4D vision of what opportunities better communication will open for you.
Be specific.
Now, ask again, what do you need to do to communicate better today to get you nearer to this goal?
It could be something as simple as being certain at the start of your day who you really need to engage with.
Identify the people or person that matters to help you achieve today’s aim. Be clear on what you want to achieve today and then who is it that you need to engage and connect with to be successful.
Then you can build your mission to connect with then inform, influence or inspire that person or people.
Every day you can do one small thing.
Today is about identifying your audience. Tomorrow could be your content.
But always with success clear in your mind’s eye.
Give it a go for a week. I know it will work – much better than a New Year’s resolution.
